A little bit of everything. A lot of figuring things out.

I enjoy solving problems, learning new things, and making ideas real. Sometimes that means designing a website, mapping a nature preserve, or printing a poster in my basement.

My background spans UX design, graphic design, and a whole lot of hands-on experimentation. The common thread is figuring out what needs to happen, finding a way to make it happen, and making something useful in the process.

Here's a sampling of what I've worked on.

User Experience & Service Design

Good design isn't just about making things look pretty. It's about making them work better for the people who use them.

I use research, observation, and testing to find problems and develop practical solutions for businesses, employees, and customers. That might mean improving a digital product, streamlining a process, or figuring out why forklift drivers keep blowing stop signs.

9 month pilot

A tedious, paper-based process involving highlighters became an automated tool for measuring operator downtime across a campus.

I designed and programmed a utility that turned imported data into reports by building, shift, and individual operators. The reports helped identify where the greatest amounts of time were being lost, with early estimates suggesting the solution could save $3 million.

Sweet Life Garden Group Website

Since 2023 I have been building and maintaining the Sweet Life Garden Group website, a local non-profit group centered on community gardening.

The group wanted a WordPress website so that they could add blog entries at their leisure and I built on that foundation using the Semplice dynamic theme.

Catlin Park Maps

InDesign

For more than 20 years, Catlin Park in LaSalle County, Illinois, relied on a hand-painted trail map that no longer accurately reflected its 333 acres of trails and natural features.

In 2023, I worked with the park director to map the trails using GPS and create an updated trail map. I designed trail markers that use both colors and dashed patterns to make them easier to distinguish for people with color-vision deficiencies. The finished map also included information about the park and was made available digitally.

We're now discussing updates to the map for 2027, along with new park signage.

Graphic Design

I enjoy taking a rough idea and turning it into something people can hold, wear, hang on a wall, or put on a record shelf. Here are a few examples.

Shoestring

For a pop-up venue called Pete's Place, I produced a two-color silkscreened poster in my basement studio. Printed on 100 lb. cover stock, the 12 × 18-inch poster features Ray Bolger as the Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz, with the eyes removed to give the image a different feel.

Sometimes a tight deadline and a limited budget are all part of the fun.

The Shifties Album Cover

Tools
Photoshop
Illustrator

The Shifties are a rock group out of Chicago, Illinois. Their drummer was familiar with my work and recommended me to help design their new record album cover.

They had some loose ideas, but not quite the tools and know-how to execute them. I refined their image files, laid out the text, vectorized the logo, and submitted the final artwork to Smashed Plastic who pressed the record and printed the cover.

PedTerra Shoes Logo Design

Tools
Illustrator
Sketching

PedTerra Shoes, an online retailer specializing in open-toe-box footwear, wanted a custom wordmark rather than an off-the-shelf font.

I designed a distinctive logo for the website in 2019, then updated the wordmark in 2020 when a trademark conflict required the business to change its name. They've continued using the logo ever since.

Miscellany

Here are a handful of projects that don't fit neatly into other categories.

Vintage Fender Coronado II Restomod

This is a personal project that has involved designing custom parts in the computer for laser cutting out of brass, nickel plating parts on my kitchen counter, and applying original waterslide decals to the headstock. This will likely get a whole video when it is complete.

Pet Portraits

I stumbled into pet portraiture and here are two examples of the different forms it can take. One is a traditional watercolor painting featuring two dogs from a reference photo. The other is a pop art display of the dog’s face rotoscoped digitally. The vector construction allows this image to be infinitely scalable so that it can be printed in a variety of sizes on anything that can be printed.

3D Printing

Functional prints include custom storage bins for watercolor paints, jigs for woodworking, and cable organizers for the home. I’ve also printed custom scaled cosplay armor and model train parts for clients. As I learn more about 3D modeling, I have some ambitious projects in mind for the future.

Work It Out With Me

Have an idea but aren't sure how to make it happen? Need someone to tackle a problem you've been putting off? Or just want to see if we might be a good fit?

Get in touch. The worst I can do is say no.

"NO!"

See? And I probably won't be nearly that aggressive.

A Note for Musicians

I especially enjoy working with independent bands and musicians. Whether you need merch, album artwork, a poster, or help bringing a custom instrument to life, I'd love to hear what you're working on.

Have a project in mind? Let's figure it out.
